Have less money for capital improvements? Have less available right of way for more capacity? Have you wondered what to do about this?
All of us have.
Part of the solution will lie in a concept called Integrated Corridor Management (ICM). ICM is about bringing together all the resources in a transportation corridor and considering how to make them work together well, thereby increasing capacity and reliability of the whole corridor. As the USDOT ITS Joint Program Office notes, “Facilities and services on a corridor are often independently operated, and efforts to date to reduce congestion have focused on the optimization of the performance of individual assets.” ICM considers the transportation system to include highways, arterials, transit, freight movement, and ITS resources and works to integrate those to best use existing resources. ICM also considers how to leverage our technology and help prepare for emerging technologies.
This training will introduce the concept and processes of ICM, review one of two UDOT major demonstration projects, give an update on the current I-35 ICM project, and allow participants to develop their own future ICM use case. Through an ICM approach, transportation professionals manage the corridor as a multimodal system and make operational decisions for the benefit of the corridor as a whole.
Instructors:
Jennifer Russell, EISE, Garver:
Jennifer is a transportation planner and systems engineer who has a range of experiences from transportation planning and funding, through logistics and movement of freight and people on the transportation network. She has been a systems engineer for the California High-Speed Rail program, a transportation planner for the Honolulu Rail Transit project, and an officer in the US Army Transportation Corps. Integrated Corridor Management is a personal interest for Jennifer, and she is currently a Project Manager for the I-35 ICM project. Jennifer holds a B.S. in Engineering Psychology from the United States Military Academy and a M.S. and Engineer Degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Southern California.
Ray Webb, PE, PTOE, MARC:
Ray has worked in a wide variety of civil, traffic and ITS engineering for over 15 years of his over 25 year career. Currently, Ray leads the Operation Green Light program that coordinates nearly 700 signals in the Kansas City Region using a regional wireless communication network and real-time traffic signal software to manage signal operations, develop timing and synchronization plans and incident management. From 2000 – 2006, Ray was a key founder of the KC Scout freeway management program as the project manager setting it up and later serving as the Director until November 2006. Ray left KC Scout with numerous local, regional, and national recognition for its excellence in communications and performance.
