Even the most seasoned traffic and roadway design engineers probably have little to no experience performing proper evaluations of the ambient noise generated by passing vehicles on a highway.  To do so requires an understanding of the Federal legislation and regulations pertaining to highway traffic noise, the analysis requirements to conduct a proper noise study, and the various noise abatement techniques. 

This presentation will provide background information about the basic concepts of traffic noise generation, propagation and attenuation. Recent projects from across Missouri will be highlighted to illustrate both typical and unique project challenges.
