Summary: The Kansas Department of Transportation held safety workshops for local agencies across the state of Kansas earlier in 2023. These workshops consisted of a presentation on "Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessment" for Kansas as well as Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant opportunity information. These workshops had limited capacity for local authorities. So KSITE has invited Maggie Wilcox from KDOT and Jay Aber from WSP to present this information to our much broader group of transportation professionals. KDOT will be hosting this meeting in the Bioscience & Technology Business Center (Phase III Auditorium) in Lawrence, KS.
Speakers:
Jay Aber, PE, PTOE - WSP (Assistant Vice President); Jay is a senior traffic engineer and transportation planner with a focus on improving equity, safety, livability, and sustainability through planning and design. Jay graduated from Kansas State University in 2007 in the Civil Engineering program and has lived in the Kansas City area ever since. Jay began his career in civil site design but migrated toward roadway design, traffic engineering, and transportation planning. Now he spends most of his time on transportation planning and safety planning work, especially focused on Vision Zero and multimodal safety and mobility. Jay has worked on projects locally and nationally, including the Kansas Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessment, the Kansas City Vision Zero Action Plan, the Miami-Dade Vision Zero Framework Plan, and the Bay Area Vision Zero Action Plan. In addition to these comprehensive safety plans, Jay has managed safety and mobility-focused complete street corridor plans covering more than 60 miles of roadways.
Maggie Wilcox - KDOT (Transportation Safety Planner); As a Transportation Safety Planner, Maggie is passionate about creating safer roadways for all road users and making safety funding more accessible for public agencies across Kansas. At the Kansas Department of Transportation, she manages the Kansas Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Match Pilot Program and is the Deputy Project Manager for the Vulnerable Road User Safety Assessment. She supports the implementation of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan’s prioritized strategies through data analysis and communications. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Truman State University and a Master's of Urban Planning from the University of Kansas. (Maggie lives in Lawrence, where she enjoys building community and rock climbing.)
